Good sleep management is essential for maintaining both physical and mental health. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized the importance of health and advocated for a balanced and healthy lifestyle. However, university students often struggle to manage their sleep due to stress, irregular sleep patterns, and excessive use of technology. The al-Sunah provides guidelines on the etiquettes, practices, and management of sleep. Therefore, this study aims to compile hadiths related to sleep from al-Kutub al-Sittah, identify the al-Sunah perspective on sleep management, and assess the level of knowledge and practices among students of Sultan Ismail Petra International Islamic College University (KIAS) regarding sleep management according to the al-Sunah perspective.
This research employs a quantitative approach, with data collected using survey instruments. A total of 402 KIAS students were randomly selected as respondents to represent the overall student population. The findings reveal that there are at least 94 authentic hadiths related to sleep management based on the Sunah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) found in al-Kutub al-Sittah. Several Sunah practices have the potential to improve sleep quality and overall health, such as performing ablution, dusting the bed, turning off lights, sleeping early, sleeping on the right side, and using a miswak, among others. In addition, more than 90% of respondents were aware of the Sunah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in sleep management; however, certain Sunah practices were found to be only occasionally or rarely observed in daily life.
